Should Rick Perry win the Repub nod, then I will, of course, support him (and I may do so sooner than that, depending on whether anyone else gets in). Given the waters in which I swim, article one of the faux puzzlement I will face over my stand will be Perry's lack of full-throated endorsement of evolution.
No stronger advocate, upholder, and defender of the Theory of Evolution will thee find than me. Others know this; hence the point of attack.
I could wax complex; however, better to simply cite Alana Goodman at Contentions, pointing out the ubiquitousness of pro-creationism statements by Repub Presidential candidates through recent history:
"Reagan was wrong on the science. And his comments prompted a fair amount of criticism at the time. But his opinion on the issue had no bearing on the qualities that made him a great president: his judgment, leadership, wisdom and character. Plus, when will the president’s personal opinion on evolution have any impact on policy? Is there a pending fight over mandatory federal creationism programs in the public schools that I’m unaware of? There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize Perry, but discounting him based on his remarks on evolution would be short-sighted."
And despite this Repub factoid, it's the Dems who (despite their ridiculous propaganda to the contrary) compare poorly in terms of defense of science in the formation of public policy (Kyoto, EPA regs, the FDA, consumer product regs, anti-drug programs, Bill Ayers-type 'new ed,' opposition to brain research, obstruction of new sources of energy, and on and on and on and on), not to mention defense of reason in the formation of public policy more generally (everything Obama).
I'm not interested in all the strutting and preening and fawning over 'science.' I don't need to prove how 'scientific' I am (I don't care if you know or not, i.e. whether you're right or wrong about me). I'm interested in reasonable, effective public policy. My interlocutors might do better in their political choices if they oriented themselves similarly.

Pining For The 'Stache
Just got done watching the Repub debate. Santorum did a respectable job as stand-in, but Paul was begging to be slapped down by the 'Stache.
The Paul-bots in the audience were very annoying, and they're swamping the Fox News online poll (so what else is new).
Other than Paul, everyone looked strong enough (hard not to, when you're being compared to The One) and more than acceptable as a replacement for He Who Can Easily Be Named.
But drilling down...
In the absence of the 'Stache, I'd say Gingrich was best, despite his prickliness. He ran away least, demonstrated surest command, and consistently displayed real insight.
When all is said and done, though, Romney'll do. He's flawed for sure, and I don't see voting for him in the primary, but against Obama it'd be a no-brainer.
Santorum, as I said, was the sole subtantial presence on foreign policy. But if I'm gonna bet on a very dark horse, there's gotta be broader congruence and/or real spark, and Santorum's too far right on social issues.
Huntsman, Cain, Bachmann, Pawlenty? Eh.

Finally, finally, finally! I've been waiting three years for someone in the mainstream media to point out that the emperor has no clothes, and Bret Stephens is the one to do it (WSJ). Stephens is right on the money in pointing out that the incessant praising of Obama's intelligence is nothing but hype.

Memo to Dems: Boehner's plan is already a compromise. It does nothing to address the real structural reforms needed to save important entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. Nor does it cut spending a fraction of an iota as much as is needed. It can generously be called a 'start' in the right direction.
But Dems, in the core of their being, don't get that our economic future is our future. Sure, they mouth platitudes about getting our 'fiscal house in order,' opposing tax increases, and eliminating 'waste' (especially when an election looms and swing [low info] voters need to be deceived). But when the rubber meets the road they (even those who, risibly, claim to be 'fiscally conservative') focus on where their hearts - and their base and therefore the source of most of their votes and their money - really reside: class warfare, the growth qua growth of government, and the relativization of the Constitution. Twenty six percent of GDP in government spending, 66% of budgetary spending on wealth transfers, and the life-choking explosion of the regulatory state is just not enough for them. They want more.

Terror In Norway
Identity of freakazoids unknown as yet, but we have this (Atlas Shrugs):
"The news of an explosion in the Norwegian government quarter was cheered as 'good news' by Al-Qaida followers on Islamic internet forums. 'You don't have much more time to pull your soldiers out of Afghanistan or you'll see blood in the streets', wrote one user."
Background at Malkin's place:
"FYI: Yes, there is a militant Muslim presence in Oslo. See this."
So we don't quite know yet. But we're all asking the same question (some - conservatives - more honestly than others).
Addendum: already from the AP:
"A Norwegian police official says the 32-year-old Norwegian man suspected of the Oslo bombing and a shooting at a youth camp does not appear to be linked to Islamist terrorism.
"The official says the attacks probably have more in common with the 1995 attack on a U.S. federal building in Oklahoma City than the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks."
Occasionally the freakazoid is a rarer flavor.
There were early reports of jihadi 'credit' claims but those claims were subsequently muddied. Time will tell.
Next time, and there will be next time, the very same questions will still be justified - however it turns out this time around.

"Early reports quote witnesses as describing the Oslo suspect who is in custody as 'blond,' 'Nordic-looking,' and 'Norwegian.' Naturally, MSNBC is going up in a balloon over this, reporting that a 'specialist in Islamic movements' is 'caution[ing] that widespread assumptions that the attacks were connected to international terrorism could be wrong.' The expert, Magnus Ranstorp, concludes that the description of the suspect points 'to an internal rather than an external extremist.'
"Again, it is premature to draw conclusions at this stage. Still, having debated the subject of profiling for years, I am always amazed at how quickly the people who say we must not profile become committed profilers when it suits their purposes."
